What is Muslin Cotton?

A fabric with a royal past

Muslin was first woven centuries ago in Bengal, in today's Bangladesh. The finest pieces were so light that weavers gave them poetic names like running water and woven air, and they were prized by emperors and nobility far beyond India.

Why it feels different

  • Softer every wash: the cotton relaxes with every wash and settles into a lived-in softness.
  • Breathable: the open gauze weave lets air move through, so you stay cool in summer and comfortably warm in winter.
  • Light but strong: six layers of gauze give it body and durability without the weight.

Made to be used every day

Ours is made the slow way: six layers of pure cotton gauze, woven, washed and finished into the blanket you reach for every night, on the bed or on the sofa.

Care & Details

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, then line dry or tumble dry on low. Skip the fabric softener and the iron: the crinkle is part of the charm.

Muslin is a natural, slightly elastic cotton, so small size differences of a few centimetres are normal. Measurements are taken with the blanket gently stretched.

Hot washes can shrink cotton. Keep it cool and your blanket keeps its size and softness for years.

The making of

From boll to blanket

Muslin has been woven for centuries. Ours still follows the same 7 steps, from a cotton field to your bed.

01 The field

Grown slow, picked ripe

Cotton grows for months under the sun and is picked only when the bolls burst open, soft as fresh snow. Some days it's hard not to jump in.

02 The card

Cleaned and carded

The raw cotton is cleaned of seeds and leaves, then carded: wire-covered drums comb the fibres into a soft, airy web that gathers in tall cans.

03 The spinning

From cloud to yarn

From the cans, the soft cotton is drawn straight into the spinning machine, which stretches it, twists it into a fine, gentle yarn and winds it onto bobbins.

04 The warp

Hundreds of threads, side by side

Hundreds of bobbins are lined up on a tall rack, and their threads are laid side by side onto one big roller: the warp, the backbone of every blanket.

05 The loom

Woven, layer upon layer

On the loom, 6 layers of open gauze are woven at the same time and joined at tiny points, so they breathe separately but move as one.

06 The wash

Washed until it crinkles

The fabric is washed and tumble-dried. The layers shrink and bloom into muslin's signature crinkle, and arrive already soft.

07 The finish

Cut, sewn and checked by hand

Every blanket is cut, hemmed and inspected by hand, then folded and sent on its way to your bed.

Inside the blanket

Six layers. One soft blanket.

Six sheets of open cotton gauze, stacked and stitched as one. Light enough for October, warm enough for January.

Layer 1

The soft outer face

Open-weave cotton gauze that gets softer and more crinkled with every wash.

Layers 2 – 5

Four breathing layers

Tiny pockets of air between them hold your warmth in winter and let heat escape in summer.

Stitched as one

Sewn through all six

Fine lines of stitching hold the layers together, so they move as one, never bunch, and bloom into that signature crinkle.

Layer 6

No wrong side

The same soft gauze on the back, so it's just as lovely whichever way it lands.

softer with every wash

Made to get softer, and softer

Most blankets slowly lose the feeling you bought them for. Muslin does the opposite. Every wash softens the cotton further, so your blanket only becomes more inviting with time.

Questions, answered

Which size do I need?

Throw for the sofa or the end of the bed, Large Throw for a single bed, Queen for a 160 cm double and King for 180 cm and wider. Every size is shown to scale above.

Will it shrink in the wash?

Each blanket is pre-washed before it leaves us, so it has already done its shrinking. Wash cold and dry low to keep its size.

Is muslin warm enough for winter?

The layers trap air between them, so the blanket keeps you warm without overheating. Use it alone in summer and over your duvet in winter.

How does the 99-night trial work?

Sleep with it, wash it, use it every day. If you don't love it within 99 nights of delivery, contact us and we'll arrange the return and a full refund.

Why does it look crinkled?

That's the muslin at work. The layers are joined only at small points, so when the cotton is washed it puffs up into soft ripples. No ironing needed, ever.

“I bought this because I needed a light layer for the sofa. It feels comfortable without feeling bulky and it is light enough to move around with one hand.”

“I have had this blanket for 3 weeks now. When I opened the package the blanket was a gorgeous color but not as soft as I thought it was. The length and width was larger than I thought which is great. Washed it, dried it on low heat. It did get softer and has gotten softer everyday since.”

“I absolutely love this blanket. Pros: I’m a big fan of cotton and more natural feeling fabrics and this does not have that fake feel some blankets have. It’s also surprisingly soft. Not fleece/plush blanket soft, the softness of a well loved t-shirt type soft. Cons: It’s not very aesthetically pleasing. It wrinkles easily and if you have cats, there will be snags. Neither of those things bother me, but if you’re someone who really cares how your bed looks, then it might not be ideal”

“I was unsure whether a lightweight blanket would feel warm enough, but this one is comfortable without being heavy. I use it on the changing area for feeding the baby. It is also easy to fold and put away when I do not need it. It is simple, comfortable and useful.”
